Apparently, modern oil formulas don't require you to change oil viscosity during hot and cold months. Moreover, synthetic oils are only required if you abuse your vehicle (towing, extreme abuse, stop-n-go traffic).

surely you meant heavier, not lighter oil? Anyways, that's not nec. these days in newer engines.

I do go lighter in the coolest months here with my old car's oil ... from 20W 50 (Valvoline VR1)to 15W 40 (Shell Rotella) Dec thru March

5w30 all year round...sometimes 5w20 during the winter months...it depends on whether there is a sale beforehand.

If you did change viscosities, it would be the opposite of what the topic says: a heavier oil in summer, and a LIGHTER oil in winter.

The Popular Mechanics article is dead wrong about one thing. They state:

While we're on the topic of oil, it's worth taking a moment to demystify synthetic oil. Synthetics are really just natural oil refined to a much higher degree, with more complex additive packages for improving performance in both everyday and extreme conditions.
_____
This is a very misleading statement because there is no technical definition for "synthetics" in SAE standards. In the US, a synthetic oil can be just about anything the marketer wants it to be. Many of the most well-known marketers like Mobil, Pennzoil, and Castrol use Group III petroleum and call it "synthetic". Today, even the most well-known "synthetic", Mobil 1 is mostly Group III petroleum.

Group III petroleum is definitely better than Group II oils but true synthetic lubes made by Synlube, Redline and Amsoil (Signature line) are still better and they don't cost much more than the pretenders on a per mile basis. They are found in API Group IV and V.
