I know BP is one company who doesn't purchase gas from the Middle East. Is no one concerned at this time in the world that it might not be a good idea to support companies who buy gas from Iran and other hostile contries.

The problem with that is is it's almost impossible to tell if they are or not. Most of the lists you can find online are bogus. I know this cause (don't shoot me please he's just a little guy trying to earn a living) works in the biz. So he knows a little of what's going on.

drillnanwr08, your "NOBAMA!!!" shtick all over the place is simple posting for points. If that is all you intend to do, then get out of the threads that are set up for discussion and stick to "Just For Fun". Expect to hear from the moderators. I highly doubt I am the only one who has seen it in several threads.

Returning to the subject at hand, the only way to avoid purchasing Middle East Oil is to reduce consumption, and increase the availability of alternate sources of fuel, to the point where the US doesn't need to import from the Middle East. Until then, not only can the US not survive without those imports without having severe supply shortages, you can never be sure you get none because of the fact oil is a fungible commodity. Once it is in the supply chain, it isn't a different colour, so it isn't like knowing you aren't getting 7UP when you order Pepsi.

By "those who hate us" presumably you mean the oil companies?

It is they after all who control the building of new drill rigs and refineries. These are profitmaking ventures they're not overly keen on, but we the people have no say in that. What we do have a say in is demand and whether we stay addicted or look seriously for new renewable sources.

If we drill more in our country and build some more refineries, we won't have to depend on those who hate us for purchasing our fuel anymore.

uh- no chief, it doesn't work that way either.

To both these ideas: Don't buy myths from sources who get it from nowhere. This is a complete utter load of crapola.

Very true. NO WAY to know where that crude came from! Just try to get your representatives behind drilling for our "own" oil and you'll be sure to know where it came from then !!!!!!!!!!

Ahhh, Another mislead soul. There is absolutley no way to know what country the crude came from to refine the gas you put into your car. just relax and enjoy the lower prices

We don't import gas from Iran. Iran imports gasoline itself. In fact, we don't even import oil from Iran.

Hard to figure out where the crude comes from. When the oil companies refine it into our gasoline the crude comes from all sources. It might be better if we either used less or found a closer to home solution.

Sorry to dissapoint you but even BP gets some crude from the Middle East. Until we start drilling more here, every oil company will have to use some Middle East oil...

Yes, it would be impossible to buy gas from a company that doesn't deal with the middle east.

This is easier said than done considering the number of refineries and where they get their supplies from. I know for a fact that our local Citgo stations get their gas from a local refinery and this refinery claims to get all its oil from North America.

WufMan, you only harm your neighbours. Did you know that the biggest employer in Lake Charles, LA is the Citgo refinery? Your local Citgo franchisee might be someone you know.

BP (then the Anglo-Persian Oil Company) was the oil company that did the first wells in the Middle East.

We have a fairly good rapport with Mexico.

If we didn't buy all the oil we do, you would be sold your 4 gallons per week and left to figure out the rest on your own. And while you are working on the computer with no gas in your car, you might want to read up on the current US embargo of Iran goods.

Oil and gasoline are both commodities. Being commodities, you have no idea where one company get's it's raw material.

The only stations I absolutely avoid are Citgo. Citgo is owned by the govt of Venezuela and they are definitely not on good terms with the US.

The brand name on a gas station has no connection with which oil company made the base gasoline or which country the crude came from.

Various refineries put their output into common carrier pipelines that move the gasoline to terminals. The terminals draw various grades of base gasoline from the pipeline and add the additive packages appropriate for the brand it will be sold under. There is no attempt to make sure the BP additive package goes into gasoline made at a BP refinery. The base gasoline (before additives) is treated as a commodity.

Sounds really nice, however the reality is, refiners sell to each other, and virtually any and all distributors. Its impossible to ferret out exactly where the source crude came from originally, at least consistantly.

Here's a chart showing 2008 oil imports by company. It shows total oil imports, and percent imported from the Persian Gulf.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/summary2008.html

According to this chart, 8% of BP's imports so far this year came from the Persian Gulf.

Among the top ten oil importers on the list, the only companies that imported no Persian Gulf oil are Sunoco and Citgo. Citgo is owned by the Venezuelan government (NOT a friendly country), and as an oil exporting country doesn't need to get oil from the Persian Gulf. There are several smaller players who used no Persian Gulf oil.

If you don't want your petrodollars going to unfriendly regimes, Persian Gulf and others, it looks like your only real choice is Sunoco. There aren't any Sunoco stations in my part of the country.

Amoco is part of BP and they get oil from the Middle East. Tell me which oil producing countries, other than Canada, are not hostile to the U.S.
