in canada our politicians say the oil companies are private enterprise and they can't be regulated.so remove .20 cents of the 24 per ltr tax and block the oil companies from raisng the price.at least for 1 year.that will stimulate the ecomonic hardship we all feel now.

Those of you who don't think supply and demand affect the prices, take note of this news......
"Crude oil tumbled the most in four weeks after the al-Hayat newspaper reported Saudi Arabia will raise oil production to 10 million barrels a day next month, and on concern the global economic recovery is slowing...... Oil declined as much as 3.1 percent as London-based al- Hayat cited unidentified senior OPEC and industry officials as the sources of the Saudi output plan...... Crude oil for July delivery declined $2.48, or 2.4 percent, to $99.45 a barrel at 12:01 p.m............."

1) Nothing the Govt. can do a) it's a world market, so increased production may drop it 2 cents 2) Speculation isn't the cause 3) Subsidizing alt. vehicles that don't need subsidies is stupid. a) market alone is driving sales already 4) CAFE standards are being raised - OK a) be aware that new taxes are off-setting fuel savings i)fuel taxes pay for highways. ii)states are transitioning tax structure to base on miles driven to make up lost revenue from increased fuel mileage 5)Algae is the ONLY alternative Exxon Mobil believes can be cost competitive w/out subsidies. FYI

Re:axelj Yes there needs to be more news circulated about the north slope oil than we hear through "normal" channels. Last month the application for a permit to develop by Shell Oil was rejected (by the lunatic communists running the country now) after Shell had spent $4B on the project. Within days it was announced that an Italian company was granted the permit to develop the area that Shell had been working on. Then it came to light that Georgey Sor-ryass was buying a major interest in the Italian company just like he did with Petrobas before BO loaned them a few $B. If everyone knew about this type of dealing, do you think there would be a change made before the ropes found their way to the tall trees????

GET Green Earth Technology. /hub/GET-Green-Earth-Tech
Green Earth Technologies’ Product line is the G-brand; they are environmentally superior as well as biodegradable, made from American grown base oils. Through the power of Nanotechnology, the little known company tagline boasts: Save the Earth –Sacrifice nothing. Predominantly available are auto and household products, yet the stock price may be waiting to explode with the release of environmentally safe superior Biodegradable motor oil: G-OIL.
Crude Petro is still a commodity which means the fundamentals are based on Supply and Demand. Of course Speculators bump the margin because they need to because they still can. Point being, I don't know the exact figure but merely give thought to the prospect of all the vehicles on the road requiring their 3,000 mile oil changes as well as throwing a quart in the oil pan 'cause its low.
Of course this will never happen because Big Oil is still receiving subsidies for the most profitable business in the history of Humankind. Unlikely that equation will ever change, but its a thought...

It would be nice to think the US Gvt COULD regulate speculation as that contributes more to the price than politics, the supply or the reserves. However, even if we could regulate speculators IN the US, our government has not jurisdiction to regulate in other countries. There are other trading markets around the world; we are not in isolation. Drilling for more does not help any long term plan to reduce consumption which means that US will remain dependent on imports. Diluting gasoline with corn products has been a joke promoted by the farm lobby. e80 yield 20% poorer mileage so the only thing that happens for the driver needing to fill up the tank more often. The amount of corn used for the process (other countries use the inedible parts such as stalks and husks) in the US reduces the amount available for livestock feed which raises the cost for ranchers which in turn increases food costs for the consumers. The ONLY group which benefits from this process is the farm lobby.

Wisdom will be shown by planning for the future: Subsidize electric cars, hybrids, and solar energy. Develop the cold engine for 0 Carbon and no heat release into atmosphere and encourage new investors for these projects. Long term gain, means changing our current fuel sources.

I think we need to subsidize hybrid/electric vehicles, have super fast comfortable trains, and stop those rich greedy oil people from gaining all those profits. We need to look at the big picture and long range goals for sustainable energy.

Most of you are missing the point of the oil situation. The first question to ask is where is the North Slope oil or its profits going? None of the North Slope oil is allowed in the lower 48', so where is it going and who's getting the profits? There's an even larger oil field discovered two miles of shore in Alaska and you haven't heard of it. It's really not about drilling for more but using whats already there.
The North Slope Oil.

The list of people and businesses who succeeded and prospered WITHOUT government subsidies or seed money is almost endless. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Bell, Edison and on and on. When the next technology or alternate fuel comes along, it will be just as obvious as Windows was for the personal computer market. STRANGLING the US of oil won't make those new technologies come along any faster. All of the things on the table now could be mathematically analyzed for their practicality. Whether it is methanol, bio gasoline, bio diesel, and so on, engineers and physicists can tell TODAY if there is sufficient sunlight striking the earth ON APPROPRIATELY PRODUCTIVE AREAS to generate the energy needed to replace the fossil fuels used today. Changing the location of an emission or one emission for another as electric cars do, is not real progress. Ultimately, most Volts and other rechargeable electrics are powered by coal with the emissions outside of the city, but present none the less. For America to remain competitive in the world economy, we must have the government GET OUT OF THE WAY to allow aggressive recovery of our own resources. Petroleum will be replaced some day, but it will happen in the natural evolution of progress, not forced with a central government promoting false excuses. (Global Warming etc)

Methods relating to altering the market supply and/or price of oil (regulating speculation, opening up domestic production in possibly unsafe areas) are simply delaying the inevitable-- the long term outlook has demand for oil outpacing supply by a large margin.
No matter what we do, crude oil prices are going to continue to rise, and rise, and rise.
The ONLY solution is a comprehensive, long-term energy plan to make us fully reliant on sustainable energy as quickly as possible.
Also: the free market will not do this on its own. Laissez-faire capitalism cares only about short-term profits, and about appeasing shareholders that want to see profits over a span of months to years, and have no particular interest in investing in a company that will only start bringing returns 20-30 years from now... anyone with a basic understanding of capitalism ought to understand that. As much as some people really don't like it, there really aren't any other solid alternatives other than government subsidies.

What they should do in DC, since they can't really do much about the prices, is all roll giant world doobies and smoke them. Then it really will be the era of good feeling. And the lion shall lie down with the lamp - and take another hit.

For those that think more US drilling is the answer, don't forget, any new oil drilled goes onto the open market, not into the US market because the name of the game is still profit.
