New Orleans, Florida Panhandle visitors surge

* Some areas still waiting to recover

* Tourism officials say BP money helped

By Kathy Finn

NEW ORLEANS, May 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. Gulf Coast is a hot destination again two years after the massive BP Plc oil spill made the region a tourist dead zone, with the petroleum giant pumping more than $150 million into promotions to help the region recover.

In New Orleans, about 150 miles (240 km) northeast of where BP's well blew up on April 20, 2010, the period since more than 4 million barrels of oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico has seen a frenzy of tourism efforts.

"Tourism doesn't happen on its own, it takes marketing dollars, particularly if you're battling an image crisis like the oil spill," New Orleans convention and visitor bureau

Well that's certainly your choice but you're missing out on some good vittles! And not helping out the good folks that harvest and provide the bounty.

There should be criminal negligence charges on this one. It has all been swept under the rug. Bad gov't. Holder perpetuates this ineffective administration.

To many, Memorial Day is the unoffical start of summer. But it is also a day of remembrance — particularly of our service men and women. GOD BLESS THE USA

"It was actually bad reporting that drove the tourists away in the first place. Media reports made it sound like the water was just a think black oil when if you were actually at the beach there was no sign of an oil spill."

Excellent observation pnd1!

People seem to have no clue as to the vastness of the Gulf of Mexico. The doom and gloom reports got into folks heads. I continued to head over to Louisiana to fish regularly right after the spill and still do, and talking with many locals they say the really worst thing to overcome was the rabid media.

Yeah, they're coming back, but there is still much harm done by BP about which the oil giant is doing nothing which only makes the problems worse. BP is a terrible company.

Good news for the gulf. Good that most areas have bounced back. And, with more time and promotional dollars, it seems more areas are likely to recover nicely.

Just remember how hopeless we all felt as we watched it gushing forth. I'm sure they're glad to be bouncing back after only two years.

The Gulf Coast has been hit with multiple hits over the years from Hurrican Katrina and Ike and then the BP fiasco. I'm glad to hear that tourism is once again traveling to the area.

I thought I read fishing (shrimp) was off over 50%, but the price rise makes the income close to equal as before. Tourism probably has returned.
