A shortage of corn-based ethanol is the latest factor to contribute to the rise of gas prices, a survey showed.

NEW YORK, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Gasoline prices in the United States rose over the past two weeks, driven partly by supply disruptions and a drought-induced rise in ethanol prices, a widely followed survey showed on Sunday.

The Lundberg Survey said the national average price of self-serve, regular gas was $3.69 on Aug. 10, up from $3.51 on July 27.

Gasoline prices peaked this year at $3.967 a gallon on April 6. The record high is $4.112 set on July 11, 2008.

Trilby Lundberg, who conducts the survey of some 2,500 gas stations nationwide, said the rise was partly the result of temporary supply disruptions at refineries and an increase in the cost of corn-based ethanol caused b

Big oil is never looking out for there customers, only their stockholders. Go to electric power. You then you have electric production from several sources, wind, PV, hydro, natural gas, and if you have to, fill in with nuclear, coal and diesel.

So ethanol has pushed up the price and gives us poorer mpg and, of course, the speculators win again.

Consumers never win...think back as to why they introduced ethanol in the first place...because corn was so "plentiful".......

From what I've read elsewhere, Congress hasn't approved any new refineries in DECADES while the population continues to grow. So when a refinery has a fire, that's an additional hit on the supply of gasoline.

Trilby has become too popular. She gets interviewed so much for quotes for an article that she has to think of new ideas or keep saying the same thing.

Don't-cha just hate it when they write headlines or lead sentences that aren't supported by what's later in the story? The survey, at least as described, showed nothing of the sort about ethanol contributing to gas prices. The survey showed that prices were going up, period. Everything after that was just Trilby Lundberg, the survey-taker, tripping out about what caused it.

Interesting how you can shape a story with little devices like that, isn't it.

great, and thanks to ethanol

it has just proved why we should NOT require to add ethanol in gasoline

it is very ridiculous to have a fight between food and gas for corns

Yes blame gas prices on a shortage of corn. We produce more oil in the US than what we consume. Then why is there a shortage of fuel? I can not figure this out at all! Yes it comes down to greed.
