Remember the late 1970's? The country was in a recession then. Also, things weren't going too well with foreign affairs. There were serious problems with Iran back in those days. Most people in the late 70's had the perception that the President was weak, unpopular, and incompetent. Yet, people could escape the economic problems and the Presidential and foreign policy embarrassments by tuning into what was going on with baseball. The Dodgers and Phillies provided the entertainment 2 years in a row with the National League Championship Series.
