Poor sales of the prius would indicate people do listen to CR.

I filled up today. I used 10.452 gallons and drove 556 miles for an average of just over 53 mpg. We've had some strong westerly winds lately that have lowered my average just a bit. None the less, 53 mpg has me grinning from ear to ear.

The Prius test score, said Consumer Reports, puts it slightly under its chief competitor, the mediocre Honda Insight, and is too low for us to recommend the model.”

Why are all the negative posts made only by one person but posted multiple times?
I’m sorry that your Prius makes you miserable. Really GBHUGVA, your posts remind me of a dirty political campaign. You’re obnoxious, bitter and highly unbelievable.
You obviously have some demented agenda or you wouldn’t spend your time in this message forum.
I’ve never clicked the “ignore” member feature before but sadly, you’re my first.

PLAN TO SELL the prius THIS fall(and buy the new Ford hybrid), the wive keeps giving me the Toy Prius to drive, so I can check out posible problems, latest break lock ups in wet weather! The Prius is clearly the least favorite to drive and the Ford Escape hybrid the desired ride in our family!

I love Fuelly, I punch in my gasoline purchases right at the pump. I've got the receipts for every drop of gasoline purchased for my 2011 Toyota Prius since I picked it up new from the dealership. That is why I am able to say that without hypermiling or doing anything else screwy my Prius is cable of 49.3 average mpg.

Full hybrids like the Ford Escape hybrid or the Ford Fusion hybrid get their EPA rated MPG when driven over 30 minutes per trip, under 55 mph, in warm weather, and if the driver accelerates and decelerates gently. A full hybrid like the Prius will get significantly below their EPA rating when driven hard, under 15 minutes per trip, in extreme cold, driven very fast around corner/bends, or/and driven at speeds over 70 mph.

Ford Escape Hybrid is a better built veh. than the Prius, I have one of each, both driven equally. The Ford with 140K miles feels much more solid than the Toy with 103K on it. I don't care who sold more, the Ford wins in our family!

Ford takes on Toyota with lower-priced hybrid May 17, 2012 12:04 AM ET.

DETROIT (AP) - Ford is taking on Toyota in the hybrid market.
Ford Motor Co. said Thursday that its new C-Max hybrid small minivan will have a base price of $25,995 when it goes on sale this fall. That's $500 less than Toyota's Prius V wagon.
Ford says the C-Max's fuel economy will also beat the Prius V, which gets an estimated 42 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.
Toyota Motor Corp. has dominated the hybrid market for more than a decade. In March, for example, 65 percent of the 50,000 hybrids sold in the U.S. were made by Toyota, compared with 3.5 percent for Ford.
Ford hopes to change that with the five-seat C-Max, which will be sold only in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions.

2013 Ford C-max Plug-in picking up where the 2005-2012 Escape Hybrid left off would be a better choice than the V.
"Toyota lies about MPG's, The wifes Prius got 40.3(395miles on 9.8gal) last fill NOT the 60/51 Toyota claims."
2004-2007 Toyota claimed 60 mpg city/51 mpg highway later in 2008 it was changed to 48 mpg city/45 mpg highway still higher than we get.
Our 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid gets 32.5 most of the time, paid 10grand the wifes P.O.S. 2004 prius only gets 40.3 not 60 like they said, but she got it for 7grand, ok beater I guess, but the Ford is our favorite, better quality for sure!
reb4, that driving 30-40mph(pulse-glide/hyper-miling) in 45-55limit roads will get you rear-ended, oh maybe your into that kinda thing!

Driving across the country the highest gas mileage I recorded was over 42 MPG driving a 2008 Honda Civic LX and the temperature was from the mid 90's to over 100 degress. Heat index was as high as 120 in some areas.

I have a 2010 Prius. It's kind of a unique situation here (Kauai, HI). The max speed limit anywhere on the island is 50. My trip to town is about 30 miles which includes a few short town stretches and one long one at 25-35 mph which is just about 1 battery full. Pretty ideal conditions.
I work at mileage a bit and average about 60 (63 indicated, 60 if I log the gas and do the math myself). My wife pays no attention to how she's driving and gets 55 (58 indicated). This vehicle was made in Japan and the firmware allows more use of the battery (and immunity to some recalls). I've seen an after market modification to enable this capability. I believe it makes a big difference.

I have a 2009 Prius. I seldom drive over 60 mph on the highway (but will do 65 on the interstates). In town I keep it at or below the posted speed limit. I use the regenerative braking extensively. I ease away from stop lights and stop signs. I have averaged over 48.2 on out of town trips (about 12,00 miles) and 49.8 MPG in town (about 19,000 miles). I''m a math nut, so I keep pretty good records. Twice (going downhill at Monteagle, TN) I have had all 6 bars on the MPG graph at 99.9 mpg.

this year it's 48 MPG - 49 1/4 for 1 year driving. Bitter winter and I had a lot of hard driving.
I don't drive 75 / 80. But the aerodynamics shoiuld help. I was supprised at getting 60MPG on a road trip the other day.
I would guess if you don't gun it you can get 45 - 50 MPG!
May want to look into diesel since that might do better with "hard" driving.

How fast does everyone drive on the freeways?
I tend to drive my Corolla up to 90 mph, but usually cruise at 70 - 80. What kind of mileage do you get going 75?
Thanks as I'm trying to decide on replacing my car with a Prius or a Natural Gas Civic.

For anyone who is believing their readout on the car is their actual mileage, try again. I usually calculate mine when I fill my tank. It may match what my readout says perhaps 20% of the time. Sometimes it is better, sometimes worse. The discrepancy occurred by as many as five gallons!
In the summer, the mileage is better because of the gasoline mix and the weather factor. Minnesota requires ethanol in the gasoline during the winter months, so mileage diminishes during that time. I have also found that my freeway driving gets better mileage than the city. I can get to the upper 40's to lower 50's driving the freeway in the summer. In the winter, it drops about 5-10 mpg. If I am driving in the city with a highway (55 mph with stoplights) or 30-40 mph with lights, I get lower 40's in the summer to mid- to upper 30's in the winter.

2010 Prius, so far 52.4 mpg with a top of 70.6 on a 120 mile trip. Another trip of 200 miles took 3.2 gallons to fill up. (Three shut-off clicks on the pump) By the way, it now is a month and a half old and has 3900 miles on it.

a recent 3000+ miles road trip yielded 39 to 45 mpg at different portions of the trip with windy conditions at times. The 1.5 litre engine is very peppy, so the 1.8 litre new engine should not disappoint.

Lifetime: Mine ('04, 86K miles) 48+, wife's ('06, 30K miles) 46+
Winter rips it down. There is a noticeable drop starting below 50F. Worst mileage will be on short trips (a mile or 3) and cold weather because: The Prius engine will run until it is warmed up to operating temp, even when stopped at red lights. The ICE runs about 1 minute any time you start the car, even if it is already warmed up. You also use the heat in winter, which of course comes off the engine block so the ICE runs more. Our range is usually high 30 to low 40 MPGs (*) winter unless there are long Interstate stretches which can push it to high 40s (at 65 MPH, low 50s at 55 MPH) and low to high 50 MPGs summer, again depending on driving distances.
* Much as we whine about low winter MPG, it still beats the sh** out of most any mid-size 5 passenger and most smaller cars as well. But, when you KNOW you can get 55 MPG, high 30's is painful. Not planning to move south though so we just have to suck it up.
