The US sent Arar to Syria because torture is forbidden under the US Constitution. This brings me to ask a question to see if Canadians respond differently than Americans. If the President is sworn to uphold the Constitution and then finds every way to get around that Constitution (like sending Arar to Syria, and others to Uzbekistan, and building prisons offshore in Guantanamo), is he not violating the terms of his oath? So why re-elect him instead of impeach him?

I do agree that the RCMP need to take some responsibility for this but the US also has to shoulder some of the blame. Harper has nothing to do with what happened so this is a rare time when I will actually say something in favour of "Howdy Doody" Harper.
If I understand it correctly the US took Arar to Syria without the knowledge or consent of the Canadian government. Yes the RCMP screwed up bad but the US are just as bad if not worse because they took this man to another country and tortured him. :(
Whether Dumbya will do anything about this situation is yet to be seen. My personal opinion is that he will do a lot of fancy talking and never really address the situation. Keep in mind that Dumbya doesn't care about anybody other than himself and the big companies he helps so us complaining about 1 person will go in one ear and out the other and the US will just carry on doing what they do best....

I would think that this [[[FORMAL COMPLAINT]] Will be very carefully worded. He will not want to upset the USA in way at all.

The Harper government has agreed to implement all the recommendations put forward by the Arar Inquiry. The letter to the US government is one of the recommendations. Don't criticize Harper for doing the right thing. If Chretian was still in power he would have brushed off the entire inquiry, like he did so many others, and done nothing. If Martin was still in power, he wouldn't have even made up his mind yet as to what to do; he would still be dithering.

Harper is to blame for the Arar case???? What's up with that? If I recall my political history correctly, didn't this happen on the Liberals watch?
