Auto sales show industry beginning to stabilize

San Francisco Chronicle -- After months of roller-coaster results, the U.S. auto industry showed signs of stability in October.

Total sales of cars and light trucks were unchanged at just over 838,000 compared with October of last year, but rose 12 percent from a dismal September 2009, Autodata Corp. reported Tuesday. The results signaled that some consumers are starting to spend again and the sputtering economy is beginning to pull out of trouble.

"It's ... a fairly stable kind of footing that the industry is getting under it," said Gary Dilts, a former Chrysler sales executive who is now senior vice president of global automotive operations for J.D. Power and Associates.

Last month's sales, if projected for an entire year, rose to 10.5 million after slumping to 9.2 million in September,

This is great news. I know we aren't seeing any great strides in the improvement of the economy, but we are seeing an improvement. Give it time people.

It might be a bit early for the Cash for Clunkers roller coaster to be over as well. Hopefully Tuesday might cause the unholy Triumvirate of Obama, Pelosi and Reid to rethink their radical, economy destroying, agenda. But I doubt it. With any luck their proposals will continue to get mired down and remain unpassed and next year, a couple of days after the election Reid will be planning life after the Senate, the speculation on who the Speaker will be come January and Obama will be on his way to lame duck status. Americans are beginning to figure out that last election day was the Great Mistake of 2008. And in America, we can fix mistakes like that.

The long term effect of the indebtedness will far out way any short term good (if any) that may have resulted. They could have given $24,000 to each of the burers and required them to buy $24,000 of any merchandise and could have stimulated a tremendous number of jobs.
