Los Angeles will end use of coal-fired power

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles will eliminate the use of electricity made from coal by 2020, replacing it with power from cleaner renewable energy sources, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said.

"LADWP will deliver 40 percent renewable power, with the remainder coming from natural gas, nuclear, and large hydroelectric," said Villaraigosa.

Coal and natural gas-fired power now account for 76 percent of the electricity delivered by the LADWP. By 2020, the LADWP expects to cut its carbon emissions by up to 60 percent from 1990 levels, according to the mayor's office.

I'm sure you will be happy with your lowre electric bills offsetting your higher heath costs.

As long as they don't have too much of a problem with the "not in my back yard" syndrom that is so common with efforts to put up wind farms and solar farms.

It sounds like they will be on coal until the alternative energy is developed which is wise. We should be going to natural gas in cars. Just announced tonight, St. Louis Chrysler plant that builds the Dodge Ram is closing. They will continue to build the trucks but not here. It is going to Mexico. They are boxing up the parts here and shipping them to Mexico. This is their idea of restructuring! We loan them tax dollars and they move and give our jobs to foreigners. I won't be buying any more Chrysler vehicles! Since China won't participate in clean air, I plan on helping them cut down on pollution, by not buying things they make that are sold here.

That's one way to become more energy dependant. This whole nonsense of going green is going to cost us all in the long run unless some common sense is put into these so-called green initiatives.

Southern California has been a leader in wind and solar power. As for more hydroelectric, where? The Colorado River is at full capacity as is the Columbia River.

Coal is a pollutant..albeit a resource found here at home and not imported from elsewhere...but a dirty addition to the air nonetheless.In states that have waterways(& what state doesn't!)...they need to make better use of hydroelectric-power..clean power from natural falling water...what could be simpler?
