Drawing the Line at Power Lines

New York Times -- AS plans for the Keystone XL pipeline faltered over the last six months, its route through a pristine aquifer in Nebraska proved to be its fatal political flaw. Environmental groups had raised numerous other serious objections.

But, in the popular mind, none stuck like the vision of a big pipe full of thick crude coursing under America’s pristine heartland. When President Obama himself finally denied the Keystone permit last month, he focused on the 1,000-mile pipeline’s passage through the delicate Sand Hills and the Ogallala Aquifer, suggesting he might accept an alternative route.

Officials of TransCanada, seemed perplexed by the traction this particular argument gained, as they toured the United States late last year trying to salvage their ailing $7 billion project.

To Transcanada
Turn the pipeline east to Ontario and Quebec.
To the federal government:
get oil companies to build refineries here or have the Government build them then sell to finished product to the highest bidder.
We need to stop exporting our natural resources in raw form. we could have more employment if we sold finished products.

You win some and lose some, if you want these items you have to make allowances. Same thing happens when highways and bridges are built, you live with it.

The article is identified as "news analysis" but there was a heck of a lot of undocumented opinion contained therein.

I get so sick of these arguments. We had the same argument in Madison, WI about new power lines. Do you want to have electricity in your home of not? After years of arguments they're building it. Now they're arguing about the size of a grocery store. It's too big. The parking lot is too big. People should be walking to the store not driving their cars. People should ride the bus to the store. Just shut up and build the damn thing.

Can't blame the Canadians for being perplexed. Environmental groups probably told Obama that the pipeline would endanger Oklahoma Polar Bears.

a relative has a natural gas line running through his farm. Other than a few signs, you would never know it is there. He farms right over the top of it. It's burried 8 feet down, so there is no problem, and no potential to hit it (unless you are digging with a backhoe. - thus the signs)

So a year after the pipeline goes through, you'll never see it.

after reading this article, I again say, people should put solar panels on their own houses, and that way produce your power locally. no BIG transmission lines, since all the power you produce is used either by you, or your close neighbors.

When you consider the U.S. already has 2.5 million miles of pipeline in the ground, it does seem strange to oppose another line but keep stalling and the northern pipeline will be built to the west coast and on to Asian markets.
