Americans Gaining Energy Independence With U.S. as Top Producer

Business Week -- The U.S. is the closest it has been in almost 20 years to achieving energy self-sufficiency, a goal the nation has been pursuing since the 1973 Arab oil embargo triggered a recession and led to lines at the pump.

Domestic oil output is the highest in eight years. The U.S. is producing so much natural gas that, the government now may approve an export terminal. Methanex, the world’s biggest methanol maker, said it will dismantle a factory in Chile and reassemble it in Louisiana. And higher mileage standards and federally mandated ethanol use, along with slow economic growth, have curbed demand.

Result: The U.S. has reversed a two-decade-long decline in energy independence, increasing the proportion of demand met from domestic sources over the last six years to an estimated 81 percent

just who are these americans thatare energy independent .seems like every time someone passes gas the fuel prices go up for reasons that have nothing to do with our fuel.refineries shutting down to either switch mixes or to do maintenence, instead of stockpiling fuel and building new refineries.seems like big earl is doing everyhting ossible to destroy our economy than help it.

I wonder what the guy was smoking when he wrote this article. Pure BS. We are no more self-sufficient thanthe man in the moon. the more we produce, the more they ship out and the people of this country are hung out to dry.If we kept half of what we ship, we'd have no problem, but greed and a foolish gov't won't et that happen.

From the makers of Shale Gas, Shale Oil is making headlines.

More there than the Middle East in the US Mid West. So quit suing and get fracking. Better yet counter sue for millions or billions. That should remove the Leaches.

The US exports as much if not more then it imports. I guess when you own the oil well you can do what ever you want with the product.

It's kinda pitiful watching politicians from both parties give out blame for our energy problems and then watching them take credit for what appears to be the USA becoming a net exporter of energy. People fret we even export any energy at all but thats the way the market works. Always has and always will. It really doesn't matter if you sell it out of country but what matters is the balance of payments on these import/exports. When we get just a little more independent (about 4 years?)) then what Iran or the Saudi's or Venezuela does won't matter.

I saw a guy on national TV (I think it was the today show) this morning identified as a "gas buddy spokesman" say it was too bad we couldn't export natural gas..."it's a gas you know" and was disappointed that he didn't know it can be exported. Other than that he did a good job.

You voted for higher prices when you elected Obama. He promised that energy prices would skyrocket under his energy plan. Also, both he and his Energy Secretary, Dr. Chu, want gas prices at "European levels" ($8-10 per gallon) to "encourage" conservation and make "alternative" energy more competitive.

If Obama changed direction and increased domestic production of oil, then "speculators" would drop the price of oil. Investors only speculate the price up or down depending on what the world supply and demand will be. People LOVE to blame "speculators," but if we had a president who believed in INCREASING the oil supply INSTEAD OF CUTTING it, then the price would drop. If you want to see the price plummet, then vote Obama out of office in 2012.

that is because big oil only pulls oil out of US soil when they can make the biggest profit.

When prices drop back down this will change

This is good news, that means that gas shouldn't ever be $5 a gallon and shouldn't be affected by insignificant events that occur in the Middle East.

This story is complete spin to give the false impression that Obama has anything to do with this lie that we are anywhere near energy independence. In fact we are more dependent on foreign oil than we were when Carter created the Dept. of Energy in 1977.

First of all, we still import 49 percent of our oil and oil products. It was 46.5 percent in 1977. Persian Gulf countries accounted for 18 percent of US imports of crude oil and petroleum products in 2010, not 15 percent as stated in the article.

http://205.254.135.7/energy_in_brief/foreign_oil_dependence.cfm

The only reason we are producing more oil is because Bush increased the number of leases and permits starting in July 2008. Obama has done everything possible to block domestic production of oil, especially the offshore drilling.

In any case, we have a long way to go to become independent from foreign oil. Solar power and other alternative energy will not reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Only one percent of electricity in this country is produced by oil. That will never change. Our consumption of oil is primarily from our use of cars. We are generations away from changing that, so we need to increase domestic production of oil to reduce our import of it.

This is the first of this BS that I've heard, must be because of North Dakotas oil find. Something that Nobama couldn't do anything about.
