Drawing the Line at Power Lines

New York Times -- AS plans for the Keystone XL pipeline faltered over the last six months, its route through a pristine aquifer in Nebraska proved to be its fatal political flaw. Environmental groups had raised numerous other serious objections.

But, in the popular mind, none stuck like the vision of a big pipe full of thick crude coursing under America’s pristine heartland. When President Obama himself finally denied the Keystone permit last month, he focused on the 1,000-mile pipeline’s passage through the delicate Sand Hills and the Ogallala Aquifer, suggesting he might accept an alternative route.

Officials of TransCanada, seemed perplexed by the traction this particular argument gained, as they toured the United States late last year trying to salvage their ailing $7 billion project.

Pristine heartland? It's a bunch of huge farms polluting the ground with fertilizer anyway. I don't think the writer has been anywhere close to our nation's heartland.

GasEyes, I'd love to say that you have a good idea there, but I see more SUVs with Obama & other Dem stickers than any GOP stickers. They want to save the environment as long as it doesn't affect their lifestyle. Nevermind I pack my family of 6 into a 6-seat Mazda5 - which, of course, is based on the Corolla-sized Mazda3 and gets me 24 mpg city. But I see all these ex-hippies and Occupy grungie-dirts running around in Land Cruisers, Land Rovers, 4-Runners, and Grand Cherokees getting 13-15 mpg with only 1 person in the vehicle. So effectively, when divided by occupants, I am using a good 10X less gas than they are...& I vote GOP mostly!
Screw the enviros!!!

The environmentalist who oppose power lines and pipelines should volunteer to stop using power and any product from fossil fuels. They should walk to work, and use candles instead of electricity. This will make them realize that it is easy to be a nay sayer. We need more pragmatists, and it should start with the president.

The President should stop playing political football and make the right decision for the sake of the jobs and the well being of the country. For once we need him to show leadership and make the tough choices. So far he just wants to please every one to get reelected. He has to know that pleasing everyone is not possible. Great past presidents made choices that hurts some people but knew that it would benefit the nation as a whole.

There really is no such thing as a "pristine aquifer". Due to the fluctuating levels of the aquifer for Agricultural Use, it is not "pristine".

The only problem with building a refinery to use this oil is it has to be near or linked to where the product is needed. There are several refined product pipelines connected to the refining hub in Texas. Look up or google "Colonial Pipeline. You will find that it serves the East coast. Starts in Texas.

Have any of you Keystone lovers out there realized that a foreign corporation is taking away land from Texas farmers and ranchers using eminent domain for their lovely pipeline to the tax free zone on the Texas coast so the good ole boys can refine the Canadian oil for the export market? Hell, the Chinese might take away your house using eminent domain to build a new condom factory. All that they have to do is to buy enough idiot conservative politicians and your property rights are toast. Do you want your toast medium, well done, or burnt?

The HO makes political decisions only and Keystone was a political decision in an election year designed to "kick the can down the road" until after the election when he no longer would have to face the electorate.
