How to improve your night driving: thermal imaging

GasBuddy Blog -- Traffic death rates are three times greater at night, yet many of us are unaware of the hazards that night driving poses or effective ways to manage them safely.

If you want to improve your vision and safety please read further... We've got a suggestion for you too on an after-market product that helps you see better at night.

First and foremost, it's important to understand what we lose.
Drivers lose the advantage of color and contrast that is available during the day and depth perception and peripheral vision are also diminished. Especially for older drivers that's a big problem and they can increase the risk for all.

Be extra careful approaching intersections, says the Insurance Institute for Highway...

Is FLIR an aftermarket add-on or do I have to buy a BMW to get it?

This might have been a good feature to have when I was in college. I did a lot of night driving back then. Sadly, I doubt my $800 would have come equipped with such accessories.

Nowadays, I rarely find myself driving late at night. The majority of the after-dark driving that I do is in the winter when it gets dark around 4:30.

It's Not just for older people to see better at night but the whole population has the ability to see hidden dangers with night vision and/or FLIR!

Interesting technology, but it is all useless without common sense behind the wheel.

It would be nice if the average consumer were able to afford the thermal imaging. I can see where it would be a wonderful addition to any vehicle. The problem is that they are only putting it on high end vehicles.

Don't outdrive the distance your headlights provide. Euopean headlights offer a farther throw than US headlights.

You're kidding right??? I can see such imaging as an option add-on but lets not load cars with more costs, nice-to-have's & things to break down than already have. Yes, I'm for it more than things like interfaces to Facebook (yes, 2 cars offer this) but such electronics doesn't replace educated drivers!!!
Most items here make sense or well known...though it seems few know how sideview mirrors should be adjusted & if done right then headlights don't bother as much.
I also did not know that AR treated glasses allow more light thru, though I get this regularly just because of night. Also, dimming/darkening car interior is just opposite to what you need for night driving as your eyes adjust to dark & then oncoming headlights are then worse...I remember the old days of truckers installing little blue/purple lights facing them to compensate for this - did so in my van when young but more for the ambience/image.

The upper income bracket people can afford these fancy stuff but the average consumers can't afford these trinkets. The majority have to just pay attention to their surroundings.

Older people should be tested yearly to get their drivers license because their health can change quickly.
