Compared with other countries, our rail system is obsolete. If we had better mass transit systems people would be more inclined to use them, especially for commuting.

Anyone ever look at the fuel economy per passenger kilometre (mile)? Check the numbers - a transit bus is worse than a good car so the fuel consumption would likely increase (the only reason they are cheaper is because your government dollars pay the bills). Because the most fruggal people would switch. And they are not the big consumers of gas. The guy with the Avalanche wouldn't use a transit bus.

Lansing, MI is a few thousand people shy of that "major city" mark at 120,000. It would be nice to see federal funding coming in to help build a subway system.
