A child is one thing, this I would report.

An animal is something else, and not my business. I see animals in parked cars all the time. Usually the window is partially down. I would rather see this than an animal taken into a grocery store. This is a filthy thing, and it is growing all the time. Health Departments need to do something.

I have seen dogs in vehicles and the first thing I do is see if they have water and if the windows are cracked. Depending on the temp I will wait a couple of minutes. If the owner does not come out I go to the store for them to announce. If they don't come out in a couple of minutes I call Animal Control. I have the phone numbers in my phone.
Luckily I have not seen this on any hot days! However I would not hesitate to break a window. I have the window breaker in all family vehicles. Some states prohibit owning this tool though.

I went into Lowe's and reported it to the manager for an announcement in the store. It worked. He said he was just in there a few minutes but she was about 8 years old, and was definitely there when I went in and when I came out she was still there. I felt badly that I didn't say something the first time I saw it. But when I came out and she was still there, I couldn't drive away. I didn't want it on my conscience but I also can't say that I didn't do it with my own children. Maybe 8 is ok because she is old enough to get out but it was a real hot day and she was still there...

There already is a solution in place to look after the care of the children of problem gamblers. Every state in the USA & every province/territory in Canada has it. There are govt agencies who will take your children away from you if you don't have the intelligence to look after them properly. It's too bad that there is no interview process in place before a person is allowed to take on the most important job of their life.

I have absolutely no sympathy for any person who leaves a small child in a car regardless of how long they profess that they were going to be gone. Like I have already posted, you wouldn't leave $1000 in 20s & 50s sitting on your dash yet you will leave your most prized possession (I know kids are considered possessions like dogs are, but you know what I mean) in the car.

To break a window would call for a special tool to do it. Do you have one of those? They say everyone should have one

I don't see children left in cars here.

I see a lot of dogs left in cars around big grocery stores in Columbus, OH. They usually are barking to get attention from someone.

Two boxers with a couple of inches of air on a 90 degree day.

Many mutts left and pleading.

Some little pure breeds usually in the back window or trying to get out the driver's door.

Its really disgusting how dogs are treated in Columubs OH.

This city isn't that large or difficult to get around in to leave a dog in a car rather than taking it home before going shopping.

None of the owners are back by the time I've parked and walked to the entry. Plenty of time for a dog to become very over heated.
I notify the Service Desk who calls Security.

Owners here get nasty if you mention it to them.

Another dog was being cared for while owners were gone over a weekend at its own home. The owners came home and the dog was lying dead by the sunroom door. Another 90 degree day.
Not only did the person staying there or the person caring for it paid any attention to the dog's situation.

Yes, I have. Quite a lot in Columubs, OH.

But the worst was when I was sitting outside MACy's at Tuttle Crossing.

A van drove up, woman got out, turned around and pushed a reddish thing down between the front seats. I thought it might be a pillow until I saw it move. It was a little DOG! A thick furry little reddish mahogany one who stayed in the down position between the seats. It had been treated like this before. If I hadn't seen it move no one would have known it was in there.

I mentioned to her as she passed me that she couldn't leave her dog in a van completely closed down on a 90 degree day. She said she wasn't going to be gone long.
I said any time will be devastating to the dog. She walked into MACys miffed and did stay a long time.
I went in to the jewelry counter and asked the clerk to call Security which eventually came. The woman was still gone when they showed up.

Security spent quite awhile talking with her but from her previous attitude I knew she wouldn't listen. I didn't stay to see the outcome. I assume she drove away with the AC on.

I hope she learned something that day but I doubt it. Why wouldn't you leave your dog at home?

see newspaper article all the time re children left in cars. Philly Parx casino appears to be a place where gamblers leave children in cars all the time to go in and gamble. One solution other then ones already being implemented would be to have the casino set up a day care center so at least the children would not be left in the cars when someone has a gambling problem.

Anyone leaving a child or pet in a car even for a minute in any kind of weather should be shot. These kind of people shouldn't have children or pets.

I hear it all the time, but never seen one myself.First thing in mind would be to break a glass if I can't open it some other way,but I don't think it would be such a good idea because it might scare a child so bad, it might scar him for life.Breaking a glass where a pet might be inside might get you mauled, cause pets are very teritorial.Dog wouldn't know you're trying to help him.So I'd call 911 righ away.

I've had to deal with this in my job both with children and pets and both in hot and extremely cold conditions. Being security we quickly call our state police who are on site. It never ceases to amaze me how callous and idiotic people can be leaving children and pets in such dangerous situations.

Have not seen kids, but have seen pets. A pet in distress, would be a 911 call. A child or elderly person in distress, would be a broken window and a 911 call IN A HEARTBEAT in Oklahoma with over 50 days now of triple digit heat.

I think a lot of people don't have any understanding of what hot weather is. If you live up north, this won't apply, but down south, when the temperature is 90 degrees outside, the temperature in the car hits 120 just minutes after you close the doors.

My vent thermometer routinely reads 140-150 during the summer.

A small child in a car in that temperature will have brain damage in 20 minutes and will be dead in 40 minutes.
