280 Car Charging Stations set for Michigan

Detnews.com -- By Christina Rogers

Detroit -- About 4,600 electric vehicle charging stations will be installed throughout the country -- including 280 in Michigan -- under a federally funded program, ChargePoint America, designed to build a fueling network for electric cars, industry and state officials said Thursday.

Detroit's alternative energy incubator, NextEnergy, in the New Center got the state's first charger under the program but more are expected to go up in Dearborn, Flint, Ann Arbor and other parts of Detroit. Homeowners, businesses and communities are eligible to apply for a charging station. Those chosen get the station for FREE.

The $37 million program, partially funded by a $15 million federal stimulus grant, aims to help communities prepare for a possible influx of electric vehicles

if I were in the market for a new vehicle, I'd buy one and even would pay for the charging station - which could be used w/ solar panels.

remay: it still make EVs attractive if you consider that your electric bill (without any solar return into the net) will cost you maybe 40 - 60 dollars more, while your gasoline bill will be reduced from 120 - 250 (or more depending on the vehicle you drive right now).

"The first 4,400 Chevy Volt buyers also will be eligible to receive a free 240-volt home charging station"

That's nice, but that just makes the EV look less appealing for the rest of us, since the first few get it for "free".

If you don't have a standard 110V outlet at home in your garage, maybe you are not ready for a Chevrolet Volt. No charging station required.

If you don't sleep at least 7 hours a night like the rest of us, maybe you don't have time to recharge it.

If you don't know how to work a gas pump, maybe you will be stranded after the first 40 miles in a Chevrolet Volt.

You are partially correct. Obama was a senator when congress started spending like mad in 2007. Pelosi and Reid love to spend as does obummer. They compete with each other to fill their own treasure chests.

Jarol

Just a little reality check for you. The spending spree started 9 or so years ago. The spending isn't a new thing here.

Leave the taxpayer out of the formula. This Congress is spending, spending, spending. Now the states want to follow the pattern.

Just more taxpayer money being wasted. Let them at least pay for the recharge to help offset the costs

why not use compressed air like a man in Europe that has built a car that will go 200 miles on compressed air with NO pollution at all.

Going electric is going to be costly and remain so, Four buck gas will be considered cheap once electric gets on scene. Hope the Greenies are happy.

How will this be paid for? Will patrons have to charge a charge at the station? Or be able to pay cash for a certain amount of time on the plug? In Seattle they claim it's "free," but of course that only means people with the means to afford EVs get welfare in the form of getting their batteries charged gratis, at the expense of working stiffs who can't afford EVs but pay for other people's auto fuel through higher rates and/or taxes.

I like this. This is the only idea that makes sense. Cars have generators now and i dont see why that same generator of course bigger could not charge a car battery for an electric car?
