Corrosion in pipeline that caused spill

By Tony Tagliavia WoodTV -- MARSHALL, Mich. (WOOD) - Federal investigators looking into what caused an estimated 819,000 gallons of oil to spill in Marshall have found corrosion at points in the part of the pipeline where the spill happened, a National Transportation Safety Board spokesman said.

Those investigators also found problems with the adhesion between plastic coating along the pipeline and the pipe itself, according to the spokesman.

Once again they looked too late. Smart pigs can detect those sorts of problems that can increase probability of leaks; and hopefully transmit the info to less smart maintenance managers with adequate voltage to initiate immediate action to fix the pipe problem; as soon as the fire under the butt of the manager had been extinguished.

Enbridge had decided to replace the bad section earlier instead or repairing it but waited to long to do it, resulting in the oil spill that should not have happened.

I believe that, before the accident, the pipeline company reported they were planning on replacing some sections of pipeline. My guess is they will argue that they had not done they repairs yet because they were planning to replace the entire segments.

Hhhmmmm, limited maintenance. Must be a cost cutting measure.

If you read this and prior articles about Enbridge, you would know that Enbridge has been cited for numerous pipeline violations by state, federal, and even provincial regulators. These violations include a serious lack of maintenance and a disregard for safety procedures. Here's something from the end of this article Ms. Blouch:

"U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer (D-Battle Creek) said the energy firm has left more than 200 defects unrepaired after a 2009 inspection.
According to the congressman's office, 35 such defects were repaired."

Only 35 out of 200 defects found over a year ago. Poor track record by Enbridge. Their executives have the attitude that it is easier and cheaper to pay fines than make corrections to defects.

If the federal investigators had done their job right, this problem would have been caught sooner and fixed before the spill got worse.

Will all these oil leaks wake everyone up to checking on things & doing things right in the first place?

I can see negligence on company's part. Company made a few short cuts and tried to save few pennies and probably company's officials may have awarded a few bonuses.

I wonder just how wide spread this all is?
