Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars In 2012 (Hyundai To Sell)

inhabitat.com -- By Timon Singh

"Hyundai has announced that they will sell hydrogen fuel cell cars starting in 2012 – three years before Toyota, Honda..."

"Seeing that renewable energy is becoming decidedly cheaper... Hyundai has said that will deliver the world’s first series production fuel cell vehicle in 2012, with 500 hydrogen vehicles rolling off the line that year and more afterwards."

"Hyundai plans to increase production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles up to 10,000 units by 2015, the year when most other automakers will be just getting started on their FCVs. (FUEL CELL VEHICLES)

"With hydrogen refueling stations becoming more commonplace and the cost of hydrogen fuel cells dropping, customer demand is very likely to increase,...Hyundai plans to beat Toyota’s price tag of $50,000."

Higramma: GM DID develop H2-Vs, but, they were used solely in municipal fleets.

Too bad too many people on this board whine about "need energy independence" yet they're so badly myopic they can't figure out that going away from oil for driving is the best thing we can do to get even in the ballpark to consider such a thing as energy "independence."

can't wait to get one these and do away with smelly cars. these cars will produce no odors and only water from its exhaust and we all need more water. however, they need to get that price down really LOW!!!

In the 1990s Discover Science Magazine (not sure if it was/is affiliated with Discover Television) published an article on GM's attempts to design hydrogen cars. Never heard a thing more about where development went. The article talked about fuel stability and the risk of explosion driving design of the vehicle body, which led to a decision to design a frame that would be interchangeable with a great variety of body styles. Wish I knew if they ran out of money before fuel safety developed to the point of being practical, or what other reason they had to abandon it or fall behind.

I'd like to see then take a trip across the country in that car. I wonder how far they get when they realize they can't fill up again.

Looks like the illegitimate off-spring of the Pontiac Aztec. Don’t know where hydrogen stations are commonplace, but there are none in middle Tennessee.

This is a cal to arms. And not only for Toyota & Honda. U.S. manufacturers should look out their front windows to see what is happening, else more will be given up to Asian manufactureres.

I still dont see why we dont use Solar power and hybrid. Small compact cars could be fully electric with a generator on board.
Bigger cars would have to have something more but it could be done. The EV1 was a great car and here we are more then 15 years later and no one has come up with anything better? Give me a break.

We need something that is already in mass abundance. Hydrogen is no where to be found. I just cant understand why we are still using the same combustible engine with some mods that the car started with 100 years ago

It's time for Dr. Chu to get off his butt at DOE and start promoting cheap methods to generate hydrogen, our one unlimited source of renewable energy.

In a market like today, any automaker, using the right procedures can take a step forward. Hyundai seems to be knowing what to do to move forward.

There is question on what will happen in the future.
