Lester Electrical: New energy standards would cost jobs

Journal Star -- The national debate over federal regulations -- whether the government is overreaching and threatening jobs and businesses -- is as close as 625 West A St. in Lincoln.

The discussion often seems vague, distant, general and fraught with political spin and exaggeration.

But not to Luke Prussa, marketing director at Lester Electrical, which calls itself the worldwide leader in industrial battery chargers, and one of the industry's highest-volume manufacturers.

With some help from U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, Lester Electrical is resisting a federal regulation that Prussa says could send some of Lester's 300 jobs overseas. He doesn't want to say how many, but Fortenberry used the number 100 on the floor of Congress.

This proposed regulation is very specific and its potential ill

add the DOE under Chu to the list of eco-nuts (especially the EPA) working for barryO who don't care for the american worker in the drive for the "green" economy! Lester Electrical didn't do enough payola to make sure that they were exempted like ZBB energy or Solyndra!

I think both sides have a point. If the charging process doesn't automatically shut off when charging is complete, you'll continue to waste energy and $.

It most golf carts already do this, then the maybe the DOE should re-examine the impact of this part of the regulation.

Then again, does this one guy speak for the entire U.S. golf cart manufacturing industry? I don't think so.

If it's more cost-effective for a company to outsource, it will do so. If regulations protect the health of communities in polluted areas, should we not do so? Or just throw them to the wolves, since those communities are often poor, and this country is becoming increasingly mean-spirited towards the poor. Notice how seldom both Romney & Obama refer to the poor; it's always the "middle class." Unfortunately, as more jobs go overseas, more people drop from middle class to poor. Ever feel like Alice in Wonderland?

The Department of Energy, sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong. Not content with such things as practically killing the light bulb industry in this country, now they are creating new regulations to make some consumer items more energy efficient, such as all kinds of battery chargers. While I'm sure that most homes in America have at least one small battery charger for a cell phone, electric toothbrush or some other consumer gadget, does it make sense to target these tiny things for higher energy efficiency when there are much larger things that use electricity?

Now because of some bureaucrats inability to understand something simple, an entire American company is in jeopardy of having to layoff a good number of it's workers. Why can't the bureaucrats take the time to study and understand a problem before they start writing new regulations that have such far reaching consequences? Does anyone here think that a golf cart is a consumer item? Are there really that many golf carts and their chargers in use around the country so that making them more energy efficient will somehow solve our domestic energy needs?

Regulations here - countries with little or no regulations get to make the product and sell it to us through companies in this country. They sometimes are the ones that that are pushing the regulations.
