What is nitrogen enriched gasoline?

The Examiner -- Shell is selling a new nitrogen enriched gasoline series that contains,"more than five times the minimum amount of cleaning agents required by federal government standards"- Shell This new gasoline will help your engine fight gunk build up, according to a recent test by Shell. The lab test was split engines, ran at the same time but using different types of gasoline. This test is setup to collect data under exact conditions. The lab results prove that nitrogen enriched gasoline are more effective at preventing carbon build up than other lower quality gasolines. This mixture of nitrogen and gasoline has twice the amount of detergent levels required to meet "TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standard" set by Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota, and Volkswagen. It is the best formulation of carbon build up prevention and elimination out of all gasolines available today.

Nitrogen enrichment of gasoline is absolutely unbelievable. This is just a commercial gimmick. If they have added a detergent to the gasoline they should say so. Adding a cleaning agent to gasoline is not necessary. There are several gasoline vendors who claim that their gasoline has cleaning power. I have never had a problem of gunk build up in any of my cars.

Here's my first take on this story. First I thought of one of the strongest cleaners in my house - ammonia. It is basically just hydrogen and nitrogen. Another good cleaner laying around are soaps and shampoo which often contain ammonium lauryl sulfate. It contains lots of oxygen, hydrogen and some more nitrogen. Yet a valuable source of nitrogen for my garden is manure. So I think the great Shell scientists are making manure tea, adding some shampoo and ammonia then blending into their already over priced gas. Lastly they feed us the neutered manure.;) Think I need to patent this!

P.S. Ammonia can be used in existing engines and only exhaust is nitrogen and water. Was in use alot during the first half of the 20th century.

I'll have to be convinced that I get better gas mileage without doing more damage to the environment before I "shell" out extra for nitrogen....

Sounds like a load of crap. Shell gasoline doesn't fall into my expensometer anyway. They priced themselves out of my market a long time ago.

And just how much problem is "gunk" in a modern engine anyway? Didn't most of this problem go away when they stopped producing leaded gasoline?

New car only. It could loosen up too much gunk and clog your filters and injectors in an older car.

The government standard for gasoline requires a certain amount of nitrogen enrichment... Shell is just adding a tad more and making a big deal about it.

It is interesting to hear that gasoline comes from the cheapest supplier rather than directly from the oil company.

I have known a few local oil jobbers and they have revealed oil's big secret. You should know that service stations buy from whichever local oil jobber offers the lowest price regardless of brand. And the oil jobbers buy from which ever distributor offer the lowest price regardless of brand. Therefore, it is a huge mistake to believe that you are getting Shell formaulated gas at a Shell station. Same goes for Exxon and everything else.

I even looked up the Shell website and was disappointed by the lack of any substantive information on just what this new "Nitro-Miracle" was.

A. Enriching Shell's bottom line.

Do the math: more inert ingredients (additives) per gallon = less active ingredient (fuel) per gallon.

The benefit is worth the cost to Shell, they are not thinking of the driving public`s wallet. Shell already have this in the UK, it really does give more mpg and better fuel burning.
